The exhibition “Marching On” presents a photographic retrospective of gay and queer protest movements from the turn of the millennium in Munich, Berlin, and the United States. The photographs come from the estate of photographer Horst Middelhoff, who passed away in 2025. He was passionately committed to Munich’s gay scene and documented it with his camera throughout his life. From colorful Pride parades to ACT UP demonstrations during the AIDS crisis, the photos vividly reflect the diversity of the queer community as well as its political and programmatic evolution over time. At the same time, they offer a personal perspective from Horst Middelhoff on the people who significantly shaped Munich’s queer scene and continue to keep it vibrant today.

As part of Munich Pride Weeks, the exhibition invites visitors to look back together on the achievements of the LGBTIQ* community, engage in conversation with one another, and continue to stand in solidarity for queer rights. The exhibition also creates a space for intergenerational dialogue that honors the commitment of past activists while simultaneously focusing on the present and future perspectives of the queer community.
