PLATFORM is a versatile art venue that combines artistic creation with its mediation, contextualisation and qualification. As part of the qualification opportunities, PLATFORM serves as a field of experimentation for volunteers, who can deepen their experience in art and cultural management and sharpen their professional profile by helping to plan and implement the PLATFORM programme.
The one-year traineeship at PLATFORM combines practical work with conceptual approaches and individually tailored qualification opportunities. The trainees help to develop and realise event and exhibition formats on various topics and issues. They gain an insight into all areas of cultural management and help to shape these by taking on responsibilities that range from managing public communication channels through to outreach programmes. By developing and realising their own project ideas, they can focus on individual areas of interest based on their specialist training or specific interests. Volunteers are supported by the PLATFORM management and team and are encouraged and supported according to their personal skills and needs while maintaining the greatest possible freedom.
Additional expertise is gained through the internal qualification programme. In workshops and seminars, invited experts impart their specialist knowledge from various fields on relevant topics of the cultural sector such as curatorial practice or fundraising. Joint excursions to well-known art exhibitions such as the documenta broaden perspectives on the global art scene. Volunteers can gain additional experience through work shadowing and guest residencies lasting several weeks at other art and cultural institutions in Munich, Bavaria and across national and international borders.
Free project
During their traineeship, volunteers are given the opportunity to develop their own project idea and take a leading role in its realisation. Depending on their professional background and personal focus of interest, they are free to shape the content and formal realisation. From a classic exhibition situation to a discursive event format to an experimental improvisation show – the independent project offers volunteers plenty of scope to develop a format based on their own ideas. Taking into account all areas of activity, the volunteers develop the project step by step from the initial sketch to fine-tuning, realisation and follow-up. They are advised and supported by the PLATFORM management and team both in terms of content and organisation.
Hospitation
As part of the traineeship at PLATFORM, there is the opportunity to gain a direct and long-term insight into other art and cultural institutions through a work shadowing programme lasting several months. PLATFORM can draw on a broad network of differently orientated institutions, associations, foundations, museums and art spaces in Munich, Bavaria and beyond in order to find a work shadowing position for the volunteer according to their own professional expectations. The collaboration is defined in more detail in close consultation with the host organisation. By working directly in another specialist area, the volunteers can deepen their knowledge, gain new experience and establish contacts to further expand their professional network. By exploring individual skills and areas of interest, the work shadowing programme offers further orientation for professional development.
ERASMUS +
Since 2022, volunteers at PLATFORM have had the opportunity to spend three to four weeks abroad as part of the Erasmus+ programme. The aim of this learning mobility is to familiarise themselves with working methods, work processes, topics and event formats in a different or foreign environment. Volunteers can suggest the host institution themselves according to their content-related, geographical and linguistic interests. This experience enables participants to expand their professional skills, develop intercultural competences, promote language skills and gain new perspectives. So far, our volunteers have had the opportunity to work at institutions with different structures, from independent associations and internationally active cultural organisations to state-funded museums in Portugal, France and Austria. Erasmus+ is funded by the European Union.
